ABOUT US

Each year, the University of Cambridge first year architecture students spend their first term designing and building a real project with a local organisation. We strongly believe that doing live projects with our brand new architecture students presents a fantastic opportunity to give them first hand experiences of the challenges and rewards the practice of architecture brings with it. It also helps them to understand that architecture is a great tool for making a difference in society. And they learn how to draw, hold a drill, fundraise and design along the way.

THE EMPTY COMMON GARDEN MEETING SPACE

This year’s live building project will be in collaboration the Empty Common Community garden in Cambridge. The garden group have commissioned Neubau architecture to design a meeting space for the garden. The design includes a number of rotating and fixed wall panels that the first year students will be asked to design and build. Once the base and roof of the structure has been built by the garden group the students will install their wall panels to complete the building.

Whilst providing the students with the opportunity to experience hands on making as in previous years, this year’s project includes a more complex element of working collaboratively with the architect, the gardening group and the engineers both in the design as well as in the making.

Apart from being a useful asset for the gardening group, the structure will become a permanent feature on the site and will be open to the public for workshops and events.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

In order to realise this ambitious project, we rely on the generous help from local architecture firms, organisations such as the CAA and other supporting partners from the industry. Any contribution towards the cost of the project would be most welcome.
